Transcript From The Show

Girls kicking, kick run away.

Liz: What do we do use our voices is why so someone can here us, eyes, eyes, palms, palms kicks, stop no back off louder eyes, eyes.

Linda: Pinkarate is serious?

Liz: Yes it is, but it's fun.  Put your arms out slip out run away.

Girl: Help, help she's not my mother.

Applause

Liz Durning, a third degree black belt created Pinkarate, a combination of karate and self defense performed in the pink! At Pinkarate, girls could look feminine and have fun while they are learning techniques that could one day save their lives.

Liz: What do we do if we' get lost in a store no. What do we do? We find a mom with children.

Linda: 1 in 5 girls will be molested before she's 15.

Liz: Yes

Little Girl: Can you help me find my mom?

Liz: Very good.

Linda: 1 in 4 women will be assaulted in their life.

Liz: It's shocking. It's easier to ignore it and its upsetting to hear about it and it always happens to someone else.

Linda: Because we don't believe our daughters are in danger.

Liz: They run out to the front lawn someone drives up. It's that quick. The scarier part is that it is usually by someone that they know.

Linda: How does Pinkarate help a girls self esteem?

Liz: It empowers her physically and mentally through learning to kick and punch and block she realizes how strong she really is. That knowledge of knowing that you can defend yourself is amazing. All of a sudden you're not afraid anymore, you realize that you have that power.

Girl: Help! Help this isn't my mother. Call 911!

Liz: It teaches her what to say. Cause a lot of times it's just that they don’t know what to say or do.

And from her work as a volunteer rape counselor, Liz knows when girls are attacked; fighting back is better than freezing.

Liz: 4 out of 5 rapes are not completed when the girl fights back. To get girls to stand up for themselves is very hard, for them to say no to a stranger or adult. But if we do it over and over again, they have the physical part of it, then they have that mental part of it of being able to stand up for themselves and use their voice.

Linda: They feel pretty in pink.

Liz: That’s right

And because little girls also love ballet, she approached Laura Brownstone, owner of Wayne Ballet to get involved.

Liz: I told her my idea and she has two daughters and its so important to her she just embraced the idea. In ballet you’re taught to lose your voice to be quiet and in Karate in self defense your taught to find your voice and be loud and powerful.

Girls: And we have special shirts.

Linda: Can I see it? Pink Karate this looks like you and this looks like you.

Liz: I also teach aerobic kickboxing.

Linda: Which is a lot of fun

Liz: A lot of fun which you found out and its a workout.

Liz: My husband and I teach karate full time at several locations.

Linda: What’s it like being a 2 black belt family household?

Liz: No sparring, only verbal sparring,

Liz’s son Chase has been learning self-defense and karate since he was 16months old.

Liz: Well he basically grew up in a karate school, he was adopted from Russia, and we brought him over and the next day he was in the karate school because we had to go back to work.

Linda: What's the smartest thing our society can do to keep our girls safe?

Liz: Educate them. Educate them as early as possible. Teaching them how to keep themselves safe. That’s the most important.
