Amy and Linda: What's the best part of being a songwriter?
Amy: Can I qualify that as being a children's songwriter?
A children’s songwriter that gets everyone going. Amy Otey known as Miss Amy has kids and parents, jumping, spinning and acting like fish with children’s songs that rock and teach.
Amy: I think one of the neatest things about being a songwriter is that I'm not stuck in some specific genre. Anything goes. I am allowed put crazy sounds, bath time sounds,
And bubbles sounds.
Linda: You didn't decide to write children's songs until your first son was born?
Amy: Yes, purely by accident. My husband and I had a very difficult pregnancy with our first child he was given a 3 percent chance of survival and after he was born he spent some time in the NICU and I had to go in and be with him so all I could do was hold him so I tried to sing to him to try and create a bond and that's where good night sweet heart came from.
Amy: But you know what he's our miracle child so it's great.
And what also great is that she has a live-in producer.
Linda: And your husband works with you?
Amy: My husband works with me, I'm very fortunate he’s a wonderful musician as well, so when I have an idea he gets excited about it too we can sit down and can arrange it,
Linda: And parents as well as children love your music?
Amy: Absolutely. Exactly I try to create something that is really good for 3 generations -- parents, children and the grandparents.
Linda: What is a road alligator?
Amy: It's the bits of tire along the road I never stopped to pick them up before, but now I will.
But best for kids to count on road trips. In fact all of Miss Amy’s music has different messages and different rhythms to expose kids to all kinds of possibilities.
Linda: And you mix up the sounds with all kid of cultures too?
Amy: I can do Latin, I can do Rap I can do Pop I can do Country there's no stopping.
Linda: She can do it all!
Amy: I can do it all.
With 2 CD’s and her first music video of her title song “Underwater” she is on her way to doing it all. Including being a musician on call for Children’s Hospital where Amy shares her gifts with sick children and their families.
Amy: I really love it. I feel that this is a way for me to give. I remember being that mom in the NICU and how it felt to have a sick child and it's really a nice way to continue to heal.
Linda: What’s your favorite song?
Amy: Ah wow, I go through phases. I think right now it might be “Wide Wide World” because it speaks to diversity and where we are with our culture and everyone has a gift to share.
Linda: If you have a passion for songwriting how do you get it into other people's ears?
Amy: Surround yourself with positive people, believe in yourself that you can do it, feed your dream, live your dream, write the next chapter and if I can quote something from Princess Power you have the power to make good choices and to win just trust yourself and let it all begin.
