Our first daughter was addicted to her pacifiers. She wouldn't give it up! When she was 3 I couldn't wait any longer. Inspired by the tooth fairy idea, I invented the "binky fairy". I told her that it was time to be a big girl, and that if she put all her baby binky's under her pillow before bed, she'd wake up to big girl things in the morning. She agreed. Collected up all the binkys & put them under her pillow. During the night, I threw them out, and replaced them with hair accessories, coloring books, a little purse, annd other things. When she woke up she was so excited! She never wanted a binky again.

Courtesy begins in the cradle. When your child is a baby and toddler--even before they can talk--say 'Say please' right before you give them something, and immediately say 'say thank you' after. Always remember to say please and thank you to them as well! One day 'please' and/or 'thank you' will pop out of your kid's mouth before you have a chance to prompt him or her...and that means you're halfway home.

This is a money saving tip as well as a green tip! Being the “clean freak” that I am I found I was spending so much money per month on home cleaning products. I was discussing this with some friends when one of my very earth friendly savvy friends told me about her recipe for a natural home cleaning product. It is easy to make, safe for the family and contains no toxic ingredients. It is a Creamy Soft Scrubber. You simply pour about 1/2 cup of baking soda into a bowl, and add enough liquid detergent to make a texture like frosting. Scoop the mixture onto a sponge, and wash the surface. This is the perfect recipe for cleaning the bathtub because it rinses easily and doesn’t leave grit. Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin to the mixture and store in a sealed glass jar, to keep the product moist. Otherwise just make as much as you need at a time. I have been using this for the past 3 months or so and it works fabulously! The cost to make this is less than $1 so if you are like me, and are constantly cleaning this will save you $$$ every month! Perhaps someone here will find this tip useful, I hope so!

Teach your children from the time that they can stand what I like to call "hands on the car". This is a "game" we play every time we get out of the car in a parking lot. As soon as they are out of the car they keep one hand on the car until I have myself together and we can all walk under control. It allows me to unpack the stroller, lock the car and un-strap kids without little ones wandering off. I know they are safe and it teaches unbelievable discipline. With 5 children, it has served me well and has kept everyone safe for years.

I have my 14 year old teenager on a monthly allowance that is separate from any money earned. Not only does it teach him to manage his money better, but every time his mouth gets out of control, or he slacks up on his schoolwork, he has to pay ME money back out of the allowance (small amounts like 25 or 50 cents). It then goes into a jar that is in the living room. It is a constant reminder of thinking before you speak or act and you would be surprised how quick my son caught on to this. I know some people would say this is using bribery, but we have tried grounding and other methods and this seems to work the best for my child, as he, like any other teenage boy, likes his money. We plan on giving him the entire jar back with all of the contents when he graduates.

My kids love to help in the kitchen when I use the hand mixer to mix batter. The problem is they splatter batter all over the kitchen counter and wall. So I use a paper plate and cut a hole in the center and insert the mixers through that before attaching them. Now the kids can use the mixer and the paper plate catches the splatters.

Create activities that keep your kids wanting to be all that they can be. We sat down as a family and all wrote out letters to ourselves telling ourselves where we would be in 10 years. We put the letters in envelopes and tucked them away and we will open them once ten years have passed to see how much of what we put on our letters we actually accomplish. We actually took this idea from one of the Chicago Bull players. I don't remember his name but he had written a letter saying he would be a point guard on the Chicago Bulls and his mom just now found the letter several years later. Truly Amazing .....

Home Barter System: We have a barter system in our home. My kids are welcome to ask for things that their allowance does not cover, but they must be willing to barter for them. When they tell me that they would like Item A my question is always "What's it worth to you?" They may be willing to wash the outside of the windows on our house for a CD or to catalog all the DVDs for a couple of movie tickets. They seem to appreciate the items more when they need to be creative and work outside of our regular routine to receive them. I hope it teaches the kids that there is always more than one way to accomplish a goal.

Stop the whining tattle tailing by having the kids write it down. The rules are: correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, neatness etc. Everything must be correct. When they begin to tattle, before they can get it out, just say-go write it down. Then they will either make the effort to write it down or they won't be bothered with it. This will teach them how to express themselves as well as writing skills, and they won't even know it. If something is wrong, have them make corrections before you hear them. I rarely hear tattling anymore.

Holiday Generosity: I want to teach my 4 year old son to be generous while he is young. About 2 weeks before Christmas, Santa sent him a letter stating that he has been a good boy, and that Santa needed his help. In keeping with the true meaning of Christmas, Santa reminded him about how when Jesus was born, the 3 wise men brought him gifts. With this in mind, Santa requested that my son put a box aside of toys that he no longer plays with that Santa could pick up on Christmas Eve when he brings my son his new toys. He explained that Santa would deliver them to children who had no toys at all. This not only teaches generosity, but helps prevent household clutter. I was so proud that my son filled up a big box!

Decision Free Dinners: I freeze meals ahead of time, and in order to keep all three of my kids happy about what's for dinner, we have a chart letting one child pick that evenings meal out of the freezer. Each morning the child who's name is on the chart is responsible for choosing and pulling the meal out of the freezer and putting in the fridge to thaw. That way, everyone gets to pick their favorite meal at least once a week, and I don't have to worry about deciding what's for dinner, or making sure it has properly thawed!

Artwork Placemats: All mothers have wonderful artwork that our children bring home from school every week. Our refrigerators are covered with them. At times, it gets to the point that you just don't know what to do with them anymore. Well, not anymore. Just cover the front and back with contact paper and turn them into placemats. Not only will you get to share your childs' artwork with your family and friends, but your child will feel proud knowing that you are showing off that special drawing that they worked so hard to make.

I wanted my kids not to focus on things that go wrong or sad. So I had my children decorate a small box and label it the funny box. Throughout the year all the kids as well as me and my husband, write down funny things that happened to us or a happy moment we don'd want to forget. On New Years we all sit down and open up the funny box and remember all the wonderful funny things that happened throughout the year. It is a great way to stay close and have lots of laughs together.

Now she's 12 and even though she'd grown out of them, she didn't want to throw them away. I took them all and cut them into squares and quilted them. Now she has all her blankets sewn into one and something special she can hand down when she has a child of her own someday.

Invent Your Own Camp -- Summer is a time when kids are bored after the first week of freedom. Camps can be expensive, so if you refuse to spend hundreds of dollars week after week, invent your own camp. Find books that have tons of age-appropriate activity ideas for your child(ren). Then, schedule an activity or two every day, including art projects, learning about a foreign country, brushing up on manners, learning a card game or even writing a poem. Keep to a schedule, including lunch and snack time.

Saving, Spending & Giving -- In an effort to teach my boys about the value of money, we came up this a system of saving, spending and giving. At the beginning of the year the kids pick a charity (they pick a different one each year which helps them learn about different charities as well)then whenever they get any money (allowance, gifts or earned), they put 10% in their charity jar, 30% into their savings jar, and the rest they can spend. At the end of the year, they give the money they saved to their charity. We encourage them to keep their saved money and we place it in a savings account to be added to each year. They are very proud that they have helped a charity, and to see how much they have saved at the end of the year. They also seem to be very careful of what they spend their money on now. They tend to look for sales just like Mom.

If you have a toddler or young child with a tendency to tantrum, set up a cozy corner with pillows, blankets, and soft toys in a central spot of your house. Then, if your toddler has a tantrum, you can put them in this safe place until they calm down. It can be as effective as a time out for the young ones and it is a safe place for them even if they decide to throw the pillows or soft toys. Plus, if it is centrally located, you will be able to continue with your daily tasks while keeping an eye on your child until he/she calms down.

I started a whining jar at my house. Each time the kids started whining, they had to put a dime in the jar. They can get the dime from their piggy bank or from around the house but they have to find a dime and put it in the jar. This worked wonders. They don't want to put the change they find in their, they would rather save it with the rest of their piggy money.

If your little one has a hard time going down for a nap, try the nap fairy! The nap fairy comes only when the child is sleeping and leaves a little treat or dollar-store toy at child's place at the table. It gets the child excited to take a nap and no harm is done because children usually have a snack when they wake up anyway. I put snack treats in a plastic zip bag and put some stickers on the outside.

Stop the whining tattle tailing by having the kids write it down. The rules are: correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, neatness etc.Everything must be correct.

For little ones who refuse to try new foods, try renaming the item in question to resemble the name of something they like. Often, your child may take at least one bite of candy drops even if he won't try the dried cranberries.
